In a divorce with kids in Florida, who claims the kids on taxes?

As the door is leaning toward its close on the income tax filing season, it may be beneficial to discuss how the dependency exemption on income tax forms may apply when parents with minor children divorce. In general, child custody issues are a matter of Florida law for people in the Sunshine State. But, the federal dependency exemption is governed under federal law.

Florida same-sex couples seek marriage rights in federal court

In January, we reported that six couples filed a lawsuit in Miami challenging Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage. Last Wednesday another lawsuit was filed -- this time the litigation is filed in federal court in Tallahassee. The recent federal litigation is being brought on behalf of eight same-sex couples who were married in jurisdictions that recognize same-sex unions.

Florida lawmakers decline to seek alimony reform this session

Finances and a person’s rights in family court are important concepts when the person decides to file for divorce. Stories about celebrity divorces seem to focus a great deal on the money. Property division is only one aspect of the finances that may be important in an individual divorce. Day-to-day expenses during, and after, the divorce may be of great concern for many people.

Divorce over 50 is on the rise in Florida and the US

Commentators say that the number of mature Americans seeking divorce is on the rise. Many call it the “graying” of family court (including a sociologist who conducted a study on the subject). As the Baby Boom generation continues to advance, the number of people over 50 filing for divorce has been on the rise.
