Extra effort needed to help children cope with divorce

When divorces in Florida involve children, parents must take into account additional emotional challenges. A family therapist with 25 years of experience advises divorcing parents to focus on the well-being of their children and insulate them from the adult issues that ended the marriage.

Kids frequently blame themselves for the breakup of their parents. To help children process these feelings, parents should open up a dialogue. This creates an opportunity to assure them that they are not responsible. Additionally, parents should watch out for sadness, anxiety or depression in their children. Bad behavior, especially in younger children, could be a sign that a child is upset about the divorce.

Children sometimes benefit when their divorcing parents make an effort to keep life as normal as possible. While fun activities could serve as a healthy distraction, parents should avoid trying to bribe their kids toward happiness with guilt-driven gifts.

Although parents likely feel animosity toward each other, their children should not be dragged into their disputes. Kids often need relationships with both parents. Therefore, exes should not try to poison those relationships by criticizing a parent or using the kids as spies.

When a parent pursues a divorce, concerns about child custody will naturally arise. An attorney knowledgeable about family law issues could provide specific advice about parental rights. The client could learn how the law will favor the best interests of the children when a custody agreement is submitted to a court. Legal advice might help a parent develop a custody plan that meets legal standards. If a dispute arises, an attorney could encourage compromise between the parents and prevent a costly court battle.
