How to find the best parents to adopt your baby

Finding out you are unexpectedly pregnant can be extremely stressful. Perhaps you feel unprepared to become a mother, are facing financial difficulties or never planned to have children. Whatever your situation, you have several options. If you are considering adoption, your biggest concern is likely finding the right parents for your unborn child.

Florida adoption guidelines

In Florida, there are no specific rules about age, income or marital status regarding who can adopt a child. Each adoption is different, so each situation is treated differently. Adoption agencies and other adoption alternatives have an extensive screening process that reviews a variety of factors when assessing potential adoptive parents.

An alternative to adoption agencies

A family law attorney can assist you with finding adoptive parents much like an adoption agency. Some attorneys view their role in the process as that of a social worker. They may provide counseling to both you and the adopting family. Like an adoption agency, family law attorneys conduct thorough background checks and may use third-party agencies to conduct home studies. Attorneys can also assist birth mothers with obtaining any needed state assistance for proper pregnancy care.

Hiring an attorney can give you more say

Using a family law attorney can allow you to have more control over the adoption process. Unlike some adoption agencies, many family law attorneys emphasize open or semi-open adoption. With an open or semi-open adoption, you have a chance to take part in the parental selection process. You can interview and interact with the potential adoptive parents. This gives you much more control over who will raise your child.

Watch your child grow

An open or semi-open adoption also allows you to keep in contact with your child over the years. With a semi-open adoption, you may receive letters, emails or photos from the adoptive family. An open adoption may also permit you to meet and spend time with your child. Some open adoptions lead to strong relationships between birth mothers and adoptive families.

Giving up your unborn child is never an easy decision. You may find having more control over who adopts your child eases some of your concerns. Hiring a family law attorney to guide you through the process could be in you and your unborn child’s best interests.
