The Importance of Adoption Awareness

This year’s National Adoption Week occurs from October 14th to the 20th. Since it’s inception, the event focuses on finding homes for children waiting to be adopted. This year, the emphasis is on kids who wait the longest to find a home. Considered priority children, they include:

  • Sibling groups
  • Minority ethnic children
  • Older children suffering from health issues or disabilities

Commemorating adoption throughout the week creates much-needed awareness of the need for loving families to adopt children. Knowledge is power and can also help overcome misconceptions that start with statistics surrounding adoption.

  • Approximately 1.8 million (two percent) of children in the United States are adopted
  • Families adopt approximately 140,000 children out of the four million born annually
  • Almost two-thirds are infants placed with families within their first month of life
  • The rate of adoptions reveal that girls are adopted faster than boys
  • Fifty-nine percent of non-stepparent adoptions are from child welfare systems
  • Babies born in the US are voluntarily relinquished at a rate of 15 percent annually
  • Adopted children from other countries account for 26 percent
  • Non-Hispanic white children represent 37 percent of adoptions
  • Seventy-three percent of adoptive parents are non-Hispanic white
  • Diversity of families is prominent with 40 percent of adopted children being a different race than their new parents

Perhaps one of the largest misconceptions involves the cost of adopting a child. In many cases, the financial investment can be the primary reason that many people do not choose adoption. While the process requires upfront expenses, tax benefits applied over several years can offset, if not outright cover the initial costs.

Prospective parents should base such an important decision on facts. Consulting with other experts can broaden their knowledge, allowing them to make an educated, if not a rewarding and life-changing choice.
