Frequently asked questions about adopting in Florida

Floridians know there is no love stronger than that between a parent and a child, even if the child isn’t biologically related to them.

According to a renowned child adoption site, there are around 14,000 foster care children here in Florida. Those looking to adopt may have questions regarding the matter and want to know what they need to legally qualify.

What qualifications must one meet?

For someone to adopt, they must be living and working in the state of Florida, be in a stable financial condition and display good moral character. Originally, same-sex couples were not allowed to adopt in Florida, but since 2015, they can now legally do so.

How much does it cost to adopt?

It all depends on where parents are getting the child. If they are adopting a child from a community-based care agency, parents may not receive an adoption fee or other costs related to pre-adoption training. But if they adopt the child from a private agency, the adoption can cost upwards of $30,000.

How long does the process take?

The time it takes to adopt can vary case-to-case. In most instances, it takes parents about nine months to complete the following:

  • Background checks
  • Adoptive parent training
  • Home study

Can parents receive support once they adopt the child?

Yes. In many cases, parents can get the support and information they need from an experienced and compassionate adoption law attorney who can look out for the best interests of both the parents and the child.
