An International Event Impacting Adoptions

The process surrounding adopting a child involves lengthy and complex paperwork with mandatory home studies and page after page of documents to complete. Prospective parents already enduring a prolonged process do their best to patiently wait for that longtime light at the end of a tunnel.

They also understand that obstacles will arise at various steps that may create frustrating delays. For those adopting children from China, they could never have prepared themselves for a recent crisis garnering banner headlines.

Adoption Delays Caused by a Deadly Disease

Over the past month, a significant, albeit temporary, barricade

has impacted prospective moms and dads in the process of adopting Chinese children. The prohibition that is slowing the process surrounds the recently revealed coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China.  The coronavirus adds an unexpected, albeit temporary barrior to adoptions out of China.

The revelation of the highly contagious infection created widespread panic worldwide. Fears of an epidemic have resulted in travel bans, quarantines, and other extreme steps to proactively address the crisis and stem the disease’s spread and resulting fatalities.

The aftermath continues to have an impact on adoption agencies with programs that match Chinese children with American families. While the crisis is likely temporary, the hold only adds time to the average two years it takes for a new family to formally unite.

For the time being, parents wait at home while their soon-to-be children remain in their current home country. Delays will continue until containment of the coronavirus.  When pursuing adoption, patience is paramount.
